Where is the sunniest place in Europe?

The southern Mediterranean and the Atlantic islands. Cyprus and Malta record the most sunshine hours in the EU, and on the mainland southern Spain and the Portuguese Algarve lead. Madeira and the Canaries are the mildest year-round, because they sit far enough south to have no real winter at all, which is why they draw people escaping northern cold rather than chasing summer heat.

Is southern Europe too hot in summer now?

It is a fair question and increasingly a practical one. Inland Spain, southern Italy, Greece and Cyprus regularly pass 40C in July and August, and cities hold that heat overnight far more than the coast does. Two things follow: air conditioning is a running cost rather than a luxury, and a growing number of movers now optimise for mild winters and simply leave for August, which inverts how the seasons used to be judged.
